Every time I fly, I look down during take-off and landing for new housing developments. The fancy ones are easy to spot from the sky, with curvy streets dotted with cul-de-sacs and no big trees yet to obscure our view from above.

These neighborhoods are so fascinating and sad these days. Almost every one now includes abandoned building sites. They send my mind wandering. What will be the effect of a chunk of a generation growing up next to dirt lots?

I often see cars in the driveways, but sidewalks stop suddenly where plans for the next house abruptly ended. Will there be a load of music and poetry inspired by this ten to twenty years from now? Will the phenomenon be part of VH1's "I love the 00's"?

I guess the empty lots could be really depressing, or really fun play spaces for kids. Now that it's summertime, it's too sad from above to spot more and more houses that no longer have lawns, I suppose with the families moved out.
